The Multi-Tasking Myth

By Chara Rodriguera

June 14, 2011

“Everything will get done a lot faster if I slow down.” – Helen Clear

I remember when I used to be a multi-tasker. I prided myself on getting a lot done, quickly. In the early 90’s I worked in video and television production, which required me to manage multiple projects and clients concordantly. I used to be on the phone, on the computer, writing and eating my lunch…all at the same time.

Back then, I thought this was absolutely necessary and quite impressive. But now, I wish I had known better.

I was always in a rush…always moving fast…always talking fast…always trying to put out fires…always involved in some kind of drama…and always telling people how busy and stressed I was.

After spending enough time on the fast track, I started to have chest pains, stomach issues, sleep problems and anxiety. It seemed that the faster I went, the faster I had to go. The more I did, the more there was to do. I was constantly on the run and completely lost within my perpetual “to do” list.

I was ready for a breakdown, but did not see a way out of the Multi-Tasking Madness. Fortunately, a friend suggested yoga…and a whole new way of “being” revealed itself to me. I was 25 years old when I took my first yoga class. Can you believe that in 25 years, no one had ever taught me how to take a deep, mindful breath! My yoga teacher guided us into a gentle supine twist and asked us to breathe into our belly, up into our ribs and all the way up into our chest. Then we reversed it on each exhale. As the tension started to flow out of my body, tears started to flow out of my eyes. It was like I was being brought back to life…and I hadn’t even realized how completely unconscious I had been.

Now, after many years of practice on and off my mat, it has become clear to me, that there is a better way. As counter-intuitive as it may seem, the best way out of the Multi-Tasking Madness, is to SLOW DOWN.

SLOW DOWN

BREATHE MINDFULLY

BECOME PRESENT

AND FOCUS ON ONE THING AT A TIME

The logical mind will freak out when faced with this recommendation. It will resist by saying, “YOU DON’T KNOW MY LIFE! NOTHING WILL GET DONE! I’LL FALL BEHIND! THE WORLD WILL END!”

But over time, with practice, you will come to know a bigger, better truth…

Mindfulness TRUMPS Multi-Tasking!

If you are skeptical, then ask yourself the following questions and see for yourself:

1. Are you more likely to burn the dinner if…

You concentrate on enjoying preparing dinner.

OR

You are watching TV, talking on the phone, helping with the kids homework, checking your email and trying to make dinner at the same time.

2. Are your children more likely to act out if…

You are fully present with them, offering them your attention and love.

OR

You are always focused on other things, scattered and short-tempered.

3. Are you more likely to say something you’ll regret if…

You are in the present moment, really listening and then speaking mindfully.

OR

You are in a rush, caught up in your thoughts and emotions and reacting unconsciously.

4. Are you more likely to injure yourself during exercise (or anything else) if…

You are moving slowly and mindfully.

OR

You are rushing and thinking about a million other things.

5. Are you more likely to make a mistake at work (or anywhere) if…

You are efficiently doing one thing at a time with your full attention.

OR

You are rushing and trying to accomplish several things at once without attention to detail.

6. Are you more likely to be involved in a car accident if…

You are driving mindfully with your full attention.

OR

You are distracted because you are talking on your cell phone, drinking coffee and rushing to get somewhere.

These examples are from my own personal experience and the answers are obvious. When I look back, I’m amazed at how much time, money, energy and emotion I wasted fixing things that could have been prevented…if I had just been more MINDFUL.

I have found that the biggest cause of Multi-Tasking Madness is “TOO MUCH”.

Thinking TOO MUCH.

Saying “Yes” TOO MUCH.

Owning TOO MUCH.

Scheduling TOO MUCH.

Working TOO MUCH.

Talking TOO MUCH.

Doing TOO MUCH.

Worrying TOO MUCH.

Judging TOO MUCH.

Analyzing TOO MUCH.

Over-efforting TOO MUCH.

What does “TOO MUCH” feel like to you?

To me, it feels overwhelming. It feels like life is closing in on me, and the weight of the world is on my shoulders. It feels like being buried alive.

The good news is, there is an antidote…

“LESS”

LESS Thinking.

LESS Saying “Yes”.

LESS Buying.

LESS Scheduling.

LESS Working.

LESS Talking.

LESS Doing.

LESS Worrying.

LESS Judging.

LESS Analyzing.

LESS Over-efforting.

What does “LESS” feel like to you?

To me, it feels LIBERATING. It feels like I have space to be free and expand. It feels like I have choices and there are more possibilities available to me. I feel rejuvenated and more alive.

We can easily begin the process of DOING LESS and ACCOMPLISHING MORE if we…

SLOW DOWN

BREATHE MINDFULLY

BECOME PRESENT

AND

FOCUS ON ONE THING AT A TIME

Breathing mindfully allows your body, mind and heart to open instead of shut down. It creates a sense of space and clarity. Doing one thing at a time with your full attention allows you to enjoy the experience while being more efficient and effective. Being more present allows you to be more connected with life around you and therefore more conscious of your choices and more easeful in your action and non-action.

In this expanded state you can start to cultivate the skills of:

Doing LESS and accomplishing MORE.

Being in touch with what is most important.

Choosing where to focus your attention.

Completing a task before moving on.

Consciously responding instead of unconsciously reacting.

Savoring sights, sounds, textures, fragrances and tastes.

Saying “yes” to what you want.

Saying “no” to what is not necessary.

Listening.

Trusting yourself.

Following your heart.

Enjoying the moment.

I am a mother of two beautiful boys, a wife, a home-maker, a yoga teacher, a life program facilitator, an artist, a writer and an inspirer. How do I balance and enjoy all these important aspects of my life?????

With MINDFULLNESS…

Here are some suggestions that will help you cultivate more MINDFULLNESS:

SLOW DOWN. Rushing creates tension, mistakes and missed opportunities. Slowing down creates space, gives you the ability to prioritize and make conscious choices, empowers you and allows you to enjoy what you are doing.

BREATHE MINDFULLY. This is the single most important thing you can do for yourself. It will give you physical, mental, emotional and spiritual benefits as well as connect you to the present moment.

BE PRESENT. Pay attention to what you see, hear, feel, taste and smell. This allows you to live life rather than being stuck in the chaos of your mind.

FOCUS ON ONE THING. Whenever possible, do one thing at a time completely and mindfully. You will find that you are much more efficient. This means you will have to prioritize and do only what is most important. If it’s not possible to do only one thing…cut back. Let go of whatever is not necessary and you will still experience the benefit.

CULTIVATE GRATITIDE. You don’t have to wait for something good to happen to be grateful. Consciously look for things to be grateful for. Focus on what you love and appreciate as often as possible. This will not only help you enjoy life more, but it will raise your energetic vibration. You will naturally attract more blessings and opportunity.

BE GENTLE. You don’t have to go cold-turkey. If you have been perpetually busy for years or decades, you will have to take one small step at a time. You can not go from doing ten things at once…to doing one thing at a time. You can not go from moving at light speed…to moving at a completely relaxed pace. This is a practice and process that occurs over time.

The teacher paused and with love in his eyes answered, “Because life is something.”

- -

Dear Friends,

I was reminded of this memory today. It is a true story about me going to my teacher during a very challenging time in my life. Even though his answer left me with no clear solution or action step, it made all the sense in the world. I remember feeling comforted and more aware of a bigger picture.

I periodically think of the question I asked and my teacher’s answer:

“Why is it always something?”

“Because life is something.”

Today, I spoke with a friend of mine. She is really struggling with some things that are happening in her life. I wanted to help her…comfort her…support her…But I didn’t know what to say.

Then I remembered, the question and the answer.

I shared it with her.

“Why is it always something?”

“Because life is something.”

And in the same, unexplainable way, she felt comforted by the answer. She repeated it to herself several times.

I’ve been thinking about it all day. And then it occurred to me that maybe you might appreciate hearing it too.

“Why is it always something?”

“Because life is something.”

Dear Friends,

I was just listening to an inspirational message from Reverend Jennifer Hadley, from The Course in Miracles, who had something very enlightening to share. So, I thought I’d pass it on to you.

We all know that Mindful Breathing, Present Moment Awareness and Gratitude raise our energetic vibration and help us live above the line. But, according to Reverend Hadley, if you put your hand on your heart while breathing into gratitude…you also raise your immune system for up to 6 hours.

(Frustration and worry depresses the immune system.)

You know I’m a big advocate of conscious gratitude practice, and now I’m trying it with my hand on my heart.

I can really feel a difference.

Please give it a try…especially those of you who would like a health boost!

- -

Today, I sat with my baby.

He’s two weeks old.

I fed him, burped him, changed him and cradled him in my arms until he fell asleep. Then I gently laid him down in his basinet. He immediately woke up crying. I picked him up and cradled him until he fell back to sleep. Then I gently laid him down in his basinet. Again, he immediately woke up crying.

So, I picked him back up and walked around the house, cuddling him in my arms.

If he stayed asleep in his basinet I could return emails, or eat lunch, or do the laundry, or the dishes, or take a shower, or go to sleep myself.

But…my baby was having no part of being anywhere other than in my loving arms, breathing with me and resting in the comfort and security of my embrace.

And so, I willingly surrendered and sat with him.

We sat on the front porch in the warm summer air, under the overhang, in the shade.

I enjoyed the lovely breeze and he enjoyed the stillness.

I enjoyed watching the tree branches gently bob up and down as the wind found it’s way through the leaves…and he enjoyed the calm.

I enjoyed just sitting and looking at this incredible miracle in my arms…and he enjoyed my undivided attention.

We sat for a long time, on the porch, in the breeze -

Doing nothing, except sitting together and being.

Is sitting together in silence, experiencing the sweetness of life…nothing?

In that moment…it was everything.

And in that moment…it occurred to me…

Life is not rushing by us.

We are rushing by life.

Is there someone or something you could just sit with today?

A child, a spouse, a friend, an idea, an emotion, a glass of ice tea, nature, your very own heart…

If so, you may find an insight waiting for you.

Or you might just find that you experience a summer breeze…

Maybe for the first time.
With Love,

Whether you are religious, or not…

Whether you are Christian, or not…

Easter is a great day to reflect on rebirth. Rebirth can represent a transition, a cathartic transformation, a release of the past to reveal a new destiny…or any kind of brand new start.

In 2005 I took a trip to Dublin, Ireland. My friends and I planned on spending a day in the country. However, our bus never arrived. We were disappointed at first, but then decided to go into the Dublin Castle. We toured around and eventually found ourselves inside the chapel.

In silence, we somehow knew to split up and explore on our own for a while.

I sat in the front pew of the chapel and stared up at two stain-glass windows side by side. The images are emblazoned in my mind.

On the left was the crucified Christ.

On the right was the ascended Christ.

I sat with these images for over an hour.

And it came to me…

Most of my life, I had associated with the crucified Christ. I had taken the sadness, injustice and suffering of the world into my being and onto my shoulders. Without realizing it, I had absorbed all the dysfunction and unresolved trauma from my families’ history and made it my story. It had become part of my hardwiring, my way of seeing the world and my way of being in the world. It had become a path I unconsciously was continuing to create.

It occurred to me that his realization is also reflected in the larger society too. There is so much emphasis on violence, fear and suffering. There is so much energy given to the crosses we are bearing.

Shifting my gaze to the ascended Christ, shifted something deep inside me. I knew it was time to start associating with the light. It was time to lay down the cross, get up off my knees and breathe into a new beginning. It was time to let go of self-imposed limitation. It was time to let my past be my foundation instead of my anchor. I suddenly understood that I could keep what was serving me and I could recreate what was not. I understood that there was a higher plane, a higher version of myself that I could now expand and ascend into.

With this realization came an excitement about all the new possibilities available to me. With this realization also came tears of mourning for my old, tragic self that was now passing away. I let myself cry for all the sadness I had endured. I cried for all the years I spent crucifying myself. I cried that it was now time to be free.

Since 2005 I have enjoyed ascending into a higher state of love and light. I feel blessed to know this new reality as my own. This reality is not only available to a select few. It is available to us all.

Whether you are religious, or not…

Whether you are Christian, or not…

Today is a great day to reflect on your new beginning.

With Love,

- -

It is said that God has a DIVINE DESTINY for each one of us.

But does that mean that we have no control or say at all?

We have come to know that we have a lot of power when it comes to influencing an outcome.

Our thoughts, words and actions have power and create certain results.

The more we are in alignment with the passions and purpose God has put in our hearts, the more we assist in co-creating our DIVINE DESTINY.

Here’s an example:

A man in his 60’s is having heart trouble. He and his wife, being of religious faith, pray everyday for his health.

However, he continues to eat an unhealthy diet and continues to live a sedentary lifestyle.

Who is in control of his DIVINE DESTINY?

Certainly, God has the power to do or create anything.

But doesn’t this man have power too?

Through his own thoughts, words and actions, can’t he shift his life in the direction he wants it to go? Can’t he make choices that are in alignment with what he wants?

By doing this, wouldn’t God and the man be co-creating his DIVINE DESTINY together?

What about you?

Is there something you desire to create?

Better health?

Better relationships?

The right career path?

A new skill?

More abundance?

A sense of ease and peace in your daily life?

By MINDFULLY BREATHING, tuning into the PRESENT MOMENT, and experiencing GRATITUDE you align with your HEART and your DIVINE NATURE. You bring yourself into alignment with GOD.

As you ALIGN your THOUGHTS, WORDS and ACTIONS with the DIVINE KNOWING in your HEART….

You are co-creating your DIVINE DESTINY with GOD.

This does not guarantee that everything will go exactly as we want it to. We may not always understand why things occur the way they do. But when we are aligned with body, mind, heart and God we can trust that what ever happens is for the HIGHEST GOOD. Whatever happens is part of our DIVINE DESTINY and will help us evolve for the better.

With Love,

Chara

* The word GOD may be substituted with LIFE if that is more comfortable.

Invite in a new breath

A new moment

A new possibility

Plant a new seed of awareness

A new seed of permission

A new seed of self-care

Notice how even when storms are present

Life still blooms

Life still evolves for the better

Life still reveals beauty

Spring is life’s way of reminding us that we are reborn

Again and again

Now is our opportunity to let go of the weight of the world

Let go of self-criticism

Let go of “shoulds”

Let go of fear

Let go of anger

Let go of the illusion of perfection

Now is our opportunity to let in life

Let in a fresh perspective

Let in the present moment

Let in a bigger truth

Let in love

Let in the light

Now is our opportunity to say YES to health

YES to fun

YES to freedom

YES to the heart’s calling

YES to our-selves

“Close the language door and open the love window.” – Rumi from the poem Lunar Reflections

Give yourself permission to take some mindful breaths. Right here. Right now.

Give yourself permission to be who you are and where you are. Right here. Right now.

Give yourself permission to see, here, feel, taste, smell. Right here. Right now.

Give yourself permission to appreciate your journey. Right here. Right now.

In regard to our process together…

Give yourself permission to do what you feel inspired to do. Right here. Right now.

Give yourself permission to let go of forcing a practice or step. Right here. Right now.

Give yourself permission to trust in your ability to know what’s right for you. Right here. Right now.

Give yourself permission to mindfully breathe into the depth of your heart. Right here. Right now.

Give yourself permission to “Be” in the space that is expanding within your heart. Right here. Right now.

My canvas calls.

It wants to be beautiful.

It wants to be the most authentic reflection of me.

But sometimes I don’t have time.

Even though I know I have all the time in the world.

Sometimes I don’t have the money for the tools I need to create.

Even though I know there is nothing I lack.

Sometimes the vision isn’t clear enough to move forward.

Even though I know I already am the vision and can simply look in the mirror.

Sometimes there are too many ideas teeming in my mind.

Even though I know I don’t have to do anything.

This inner creative genius can disrupt the peace with its continual pressure for expression.

Even though I know its desire is to joyfully play and to be seen and heard like any child.

In this moment, I choose to breathe and create the space for insight.

- -

Life can be so crazy and messy.

Love can be so crazy and messy.

Or better yet….

RELATIONSHIPS can be so crazy and messy.

That’s because relationships are a combination of 2 people playing out all their history, conditioning, beliefs, hopes, virtues and frailties.

LOVE isn’t really any of those things.

Love is an energy that holds all these things with enough space to allow them to be part of the whole experience.

Love doesn’t turn into hate when someone does something we don’t like.

Attachment does that.

Anger doesn’t spring from Love.

Anger springs from attachment.

It’s ok to feel the entire array of emotions.

It’s ok to be angry, disappointed, afraid.

And it’s ok….and HEALTHY….to say this is not right form me.

And because I LOVE me…

because I LOVE life…

I can choose things, people, situations, possessions, relationships that are good for me.

Even if you feel resentment, anger, sadness, regret or hatred at times, it does not negate the LOVE that is present.

LOVE is always PRESENT.

But do not confuse LOVE with ATTACHMENT or ATTRACTION.

LOVE is much bigger than a single person or a single relationship.

LOVE is the blue sky behind the clouds of feelings that come and go.

When you are connected to this love, the fear dissolves.

You are never without LOVE.

It doesn’t come from another person….although you may love what another person is able to give you.

You may love certain qualities that a person has.

But the bigger LOVE provides you with knowing and direction. It helps you make choices that are good for you.

It sustains you when it’s raining.

It sustains you when it’s snowing.

It sustains you when it’s hot and dry.

It cannot be taken away from you by another…and it can not be given to you by another.

It will hold a space for you when you’re alone…and it will hold a space for you within the context of any and every relationship.

When you try to get this from another person…it is like trying to feed your soul with food, alcohol or shopping.

The emptiness can never be filled or satisfied by another substance or even another person.

Trying to do this causes an addiction and a craving that is insatiable.

It produces endless hunger and endless tears.

Trying to fill this space with another person is very painful for both people.

When you do this you make them responsible for your happiness and well-being.

You make them responsible for all your joy and all your suffering.

This is very unfair for them. And you.

This is not LOVE.

This is being bound and chained to a false and very limited belief system.

When someone speaks of unconditional LOVE, they are speaking of the bigger LOVE.

Yet, they do not mean you have no say, no choice, or that you are not allowed to make decisions about what’s best for your life. They do not mean that you have to accept everything and keep your mouth shut and endure a situation that is hurting you.

It means that in the PRESENCE OF LOVE, you understand the TRUTH from a higher perspective.

You hold LOVE for YOURSELF, LOVE for LIFE and LOVE for the OTHER…..

With enough SPACE as big as the SKY for

you both to be who you are and do what you need to do.

Within that context you may find that you are a match for a period of time or a life-time.

With Love,

- -

Today is my 40th Birthday.

A part of me can’t believe it…and another part of me says, “Yes, I’ve been here a while, that feels about right.”

When I turned 25, I had never heard about yoga, deep breathing, present moment awareness, mind mastery, self-love, manifesting, or connecting to grace. And I felt like I was 40 (at least!)

Now that I am turning 40, and I practice yoga, deep breathing, present moment awareness, mind mastery, self-love, manifesting, and connecting to grace…I feel like I’m 25.

People seem to be so worried about time passing by.

But we can just as easily be excited about TIME ARRIVING.

And it is…always arriving.

By living in the present, and letting your heart lead….

TIME IS ALWAYS ARRIVING.

New possibilities are always arriving.

New ideas are always arriving.

New ways to mend, heal and take better care of ourselves and our loved ones are always arriving.

New things to enjoy, experience and love are always arriving.

Why should we be anything but ecstatic?

I saw a book the other day entitled, Turning 40 and Other Atrocities.

I think the real atrocity is a person (at any age) not knowing how magical they are, and not knowing the power they have to create and live an extraordinary life.

This email is an opportunity to say THANK YOU to you for being part of my life and allowing me to share with you the things that have lead me to discover that TIME IS ALWAYS ARRIVING.

With Love,

“This is the best time in all eternity for a Creator to Create.”

-Abraham

It’s always great to remind ourselves…that we are creating right now, in this moment.

Right now….

Are you creating a tragedy?

A comedy?

A love story?

A drama?

(good time for a deep breath)

What is your vibration right now?

Could you consider shifting it one notch up?

One thought better?

One moment of gratitude?

Yesterday, I felt like I had been hit by a truck.

I hadn’t slept much in five days, wasn’t feeling that well, my nerves felt frazzled, and my patience were low.

The thought crossed my mind…”I can’t wait for this day to be over so I can get into bed.”

Next thought, “Is that how I want to spend my day? Wishing it was over?”

“Hell no! Even though I’m not feeling my best, I can still breathe, be present and enjoy some of the moments.”

Later, while walking out to get the mail with Von in my arms, we saw that a little bush was in full bloom.

We stood by the bush for a long time while Von reached for the blooms, pulled off the petals and enjoyed his very first experience with Spring flowers.

It was one of the sweetest moments I have ever had the opportunity to live.

I breathed it in and planted it into my heart where it will forever remain.

And to think, I had initially wished the day to be over.

A special moment awaits…

Will we be present enough to really live it?

YES! Of course we will.

With Love,

- -

Life doesn’t have to be so hard.

We make it hard.

Too many thoughts.

Too many things.

Too much to do.

One thing leads to 50 more things.

Before we know it…life feels cluttered, busy, dense.

So many worries.

Too many to count.

Like drops in the ocean.

So many fears.

Too many to count.

Like days in eternity.

Everything feels heavy.

All the doors seem to be closed.

We feel like fighting…screaming…

Blaming…demanding…giving up.

Mistakes happen.

Things start spiraling downward.

We don’t feel well.

And the cycle begins again.

Life doesn’t have to be so hard.

We make it hard.

Hard is good for rocks.

Hard is good diamonds.

Hard is good for ice that you want to skate on.

But being who we are,

Experiencing peace,

Following our calling,

Can be easier.

Lighter.

Why didn’t anyone teach us how to breathe?

Why didn’t anyone teach us how to truly live in the moment?

Why didn’t anyone teach us the value of space?

The value of nothing (no – thing).

And the power of the invisible, divine energy that connects all things and creates every – thing from no – thing.

(Cont.)

Where did our self-trust go?

Where did our laughter go?

Where did our imagination go?

Our sense of wonder?

Our uninhibited joy of dance, silliness and play?

Maybe it didn’t go anywhere.

Maybe it’s all still right here

In this moment of potential.

Let’s breathe and see what happens.

Let’s breathe and simply listen.

Let’s breathe and allow that tiny, subtle, intuitive prompting to

move us, teach us, tell us.

Let’s shift our attention to what is a YES.

Let’s shift our attention to space and possibility.

Let’s shift our attention to the solution, and the absolute fact

That it is the privilege of a life-time to be who we are and do what we do.

Being lighter naturally occurs when we…

Breathe

Connect with now

Shift our attention to gratitude

Listen

Allow people more space to be who they are in this moment

Say NO to what’s non-essential

Say YES to what’s delightful

Give what we have to give

Offer more kindness to ourselves

Make our own joy a priority

And most importantly….

Being lighter naturally occurs when we

Understand that we don’t have to be anything other than who we are right now

And we don’t have to do anything other than what we are doing right now.

- -

We had a snow-storm today. 12-18 inches predicted.

It was a winter wonderland.

I decided I wanted to be in it.

I wanted to shovel the driveway all by myself.

In some strange way, I looked at it like a retreat from responsibilities.

I was free.

It became a beautiful meditation….

Shoveling the snow, while more snow was falling.

I worked my muscles.

I felt the snow.

I looked down some of the time.

I looked up some of the time.

It was hard

And great.

And I was thankful for the opportunity to be in nature’s awesome presence.

About half way through, my husband came out to help.

At first I thought…”Oh no. I want to do this myself.”

I want to be by myself with the snow.

And then I got a lump in my throat at the gesture.

We finished the driveway together.

And after, I lied down on my back and let the snow fall on me.

It was so peaceful and comforting.

Time seemed to stand still.

I had this faint longing to fall asleep and simply dissolve into the snow.

After a while, I got up and saw my husband putting the shovels away.

He met me in the middle of the driveway and said, “Let’s run!”

Without thinking we ran into the empty street and started racing and frolicking.

There was a foot of snow on the ground…

Yet, my feet were galloping so fast.

I felt light as air…

Like a gazel…

Like a child.

When we made our way back inside…

I felt more alive.

- -

Breathe into your name.

You desire to give.

You desire to be impeccable.

Yet, in the past…perhaps…

Impeccable meant being perfect.

It could feel confining.

TIGHT.

Like a burden at times.

And now…perhaps…

Impeccable can mean….

Simply offering the best you have at the moment.

Without the need for achieving a pre-defined version of perfection.

Perfect is now being in the moment…

And enjoying.

Being part of life….

Instead of creating the perfect experience for everyone else…

Now you create moment-to-moment enjoyment…

The childlike freedom, and spontaneity that was locked away so long ago.

The light is getting in….

And there’s no turning back.

It’s like the light has suddenly been turned on and everything is becoming more clear.

There’s a place for YOU.

There’s room for YOU.

YOU are so wanted and adored by so many…

But mostly by life itself.

Life is calling you to throw open the doors, the windows and let the breeze in.

Suddenly there is so much space.

Some people call it infinity.

Some call it Spirit.

Some call it the FIELD OF ALL POSSIBILITIES.

The field says…

I’m here for you.

I’ve always been here for you…

To plant your dream seeds into.

To breathe your most precious dreams, wishes and desires into…

I’m here to listen and respond.

I’m here to support you and supply you.

I’m here to say YES!

That sounds FABULOUS.

More of that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a new recognition. Isn’t there?

This is YOUR LIFE!

And you can still be of glorious service LIVING YOUR LIFE!

LOVING YOUR LIFE!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh….

My God………..

HALLALUYAAH!!!!!!!!!!!

YOU ARE NOT ABANDONING ANYONE BY LIVING AND LOVING YOUR LIFE!!!!!!!!

This is a whole new world.

Everything is NEW!

Everything is POSSIBLE!

This is the beginning of a brand new life.

And by honoring your life, your passions, your calling…

You honor your parent’s gift of life to you.

You honor God’s gift of life to you.

You glide into the footsteps of the wise ones who understand…

There is no death…

Only the fear and perception of death.

There is only transformation.

Most people fear old age and death.

They are afraid of shriveling into nothing.

But, you know the truth.

With a connection to spirit, one can evolve and expand into….

EVERYTHING.

one can expand into EVERYTHING.

Wisdom is wanting to pour forth from your very heart.

Isn’t it now?

Right now, isn’t it saying…

YES!

YES!

YES!

Isn’t it saying, “I’m not like everyone else. And that’s a good thing.”

“I’m not going to waste any of my time in regret and in the self-inflicted suffering of worry.”

NO MORE! NO MORE!

Isn’t your heart is saying…

This is my time – DAMN IT!

This is my time!

I’m ready to go

to do

to try

to create

to play

to connect

to have fun

to explore

to discover

to FLY…

in my very own way.

in my very own way.

in my very own way.

Breathe into your name.

With Love,

- -

“A MERRY HEART doeth good like a medicine,

but a broken spirit dryeth the bones.” proverbs 17:22

It’s the season of good cheer!

But have you looked around?

There are a lot of sour faces out there.

It’s understandable….

the economy

traffic

long lines at the mall

health issues

the endless “to do” list

lots of rain

But I LOVE this quote.

“A MERRY HEART doeth good like a medicine,

but a broken spirit dryeth the bones.”

It’s another reminder (and clue) that our attitude is what sets good things in motion.

Most people wait until something really good happens to be MERRY.

And in the mean time they allow the rain, the traffic, finances, annoying people, health issues, their responsibilities to be cause for stress, struggle and endless complaining.

It’s understandable, but not optimal.

The real KEY is to be MERRY first…

To be MERRY in spite of the frustrations and disappointments of life is an amazing thing to aspire toward.

There are relatively few people who have mastered this art/skill.

But you know them when you meet them!

They are not in denial or pollyanas.

They are not forcing fake happiness.

They just understand the principle that MERRIMENT IS A MEDICINE.

They understand that a SMILE can light up everyone and everything in its presence.

They are illuminated from within IN SPITE of outer circumstances.

Every time we get one thing done, there’s a new thing to do.

Every time we get one thing we want, there’s a new thing we desire.

Every time we over come one challenge, there’s a new one waiting to test us.

One day we realize…HEY, why not ENJOY the process? Why not make a GAME of it?

Why not be MERRY in spite of it all?

When this becomes our attitude and our focus is on the FUN, GRATITUDE, LOVE, PLAY, EXCITEMENT, etc…

Then EVERYTHING HAS THE POSSIBILITY OF BEING AN ADVENTURE.

I’ve adopted this attitude to the best of my current ability and life feels so different. I could be doing a simple, mundane task…but with this attitude, it becomes play!

Everywhere I take Von, I say….”We’re going on an ADVENTURE!”

to the doctor

to Wegmans grocery store

to a friend’s home

on a stroll down our block

to the post office

to the recycling center

He gets this big smile on his face and we PLAY OUR WAY THROUGH THE DAY…rain or shine.

Some situations are easier to “Play Through”.

Yes. It’s true.

But there are those rare, unique individuals that have mastered this attitude – no matter what.

Because, again, they understand that MERRIMENT IS MEDICINE…for them, for others, for the world.

This is the attitude I want to embrace, and hopefully, one day master. This is the kind of person I want to be.

So how about you?

What if you were MERRY despite the rain?

What if you were MERRY despite the doctor report?

What if you were MERRY despite relationship issues?

What if you were MERRY despite your bank statement?

What if you were MERRY despite the unbelievably long line at Kohls? (do they ever hire enough people during the holidays?)

What if you were MERRY despite hardly any sleep for over a year and being 15lbs over weight? (me right now!)

It’s totally up to you, but…

I DARE YA!

Wishing you a very MERRY HOLIDAY SEASON – AND LIFE!

With Love,

- -

When I was in my early 20’s, I remember being in a nightclub at the beach. I was with some friends and we were rockin!

At some point in the evening…while trying to make my way through the jam-packed bar, I noticed something profound.

While me and about one hundred other people were trying to get to one side of the bar, there were a hundred more people trying to make their way over to where I was.

For a moment, I just stopped and took in the scene…

Lots of people pushing, shoving and spilling beer on one another while fighting to get “over there”.

All of a sudden, it seemed so silly. Why didn’t everyone just STOP and enjoy where they were?

I was thinking about that moment today as I took some deep breaths and noticed my periodic desire to get somewhere other than where I was or to do something other than what I was doing.

I know so many people who want to be somewhere or get something. Yet, when they arrive, they are still just as stressed, overwhelmed and determined to get to the next place.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve decided I don’t want to be one of those people.

Sure, I could focus on what hasn’t happened yet or the places I haven’t been to yet.

But WHY?

I’m HERE!

I don’t need to struggle to get OVER THERE right now.

So I‘m giving myself permission to STOP and BREATHE into the knowing that I HAVE ARRIVED…HERE!

HERE is a great thing to ENJOY!

And I find, that just like at the night club, if you stay still long enough to enjoy where you are…whatever or whoever you are looking for…tends to find you anyway.

With Love,

Happy Halloween!

One of my teachers described Halloween as the time of year when the veil between the earthly world and the spirit world is very thin.

Therefore, it is easier to feel and experience the mysterious.

I think it’s a great time to explore and even honor the shadow side of our-selves.

We all love to focus on those aspects of our personalities that are intelligent, wise, loving, compassionate, generous and full of integrity.

But what about those facets of our-selves that don’t fit into a nice, little box?

What about the parts of us that are undefined and unrefined? The parts of us that are wild, unpolished, unresolved and even unevolved?

It’s our light and our shadow that makes us whole – gives us depth – and makes us so damn interesting…

Like a magnificent kaleidoscope,

an intricate stain glass window,

or a one of a kind mosaic.

Halloween is a day to embrace your shadow side.

So go ahead and be ghoulish,

devilish,

vampy,

Silly

Spooky

and

Kooky.

Just for tonight – I’ll meet you on the dark side!

With Love,

A New Kind of Awesome…

I’m 39, married for a little over a year…and a new mom.

My beloved son, Von Kai is three and a half months old.

In the past – AWESOME – would have been getting decked out and going to a fabulous party and an outrageous venue. In the past – AWESOME – would have been going to Atlantic City and staying in a fabulous suite with friends, dining and dancing til dawn. In the past – AWESOME – would have been working on a fabulous creative project or program where I could offer insight, talent or support to other seekers on their path.

While those things are still great…I’m experiencing a new kind of Awesome.

Now – AWESOME is sitting on my front porch snuggled up with Von watching the leaves fall.

Have you ever tried to accomplish something and it didn’t work out the way you planned?

When this happens it can leave your feeling upset, angry, afraid, unworthy and regretful. It can make you feel like you don’t want to ever try again for fear of further disappointment.

This is understandable given the usual definitions of failure.

For example:

1. an event that does not accomplish its intended purpose; “The surprise party was a complete failure.”

2. lack of success; “He felt that his entire life had been a failure” or “That year there was a crop failure.”

But I propose that we rethink our idea of what failure means. I can think of two great examples in my life where failure led to SUCCESS!

My first example was when I started understanding about mind mastery and manifesting dreams. I had a vision of the kind of husband I wanted. Someone came into my life who really seemed to fit my description…so I thought, “He MUST be the one.” After several months it became clear that although this person had some of what I was looking for, he also had a lot of what I was NOT looking for.

At first, I felt so disappointed in yet another failed relationship. But looking back, I used that information to get more clear on what I wanted. And sure enough, not long after, I met my beloved husband who is a much better fit for me.

My second example was when I embarked on a business venture. I had a vision of how I wanted it to work out and I was very excited about the opportunity to give it my best shot. It did not unfold how I expected at all. At the time, it felt like a total disaster! I was very upset and felt like a complete failure. But looking back, I can see how that experience lead me to get more clear about what I want and what is the best role for me as I move forward. It was a stepping-stone to a new experience where I am now happier and more aligned.

I LOVE the way Thomas Edison looked at life. He said…

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

What do you say we redefine “failure” to mean…

“Hey, I gave it a shot. I discovered what doesn’t work and I learned something. Now I can move forward with more information and a clearer idea of what I want.”

I say…..

Let’s keep trying!

Let’s keep exploring!

Let’s keep learning!

Let’s keep creating!

Let’s keep getting better!

Let’s keep moving forward!

Let’s never give up on our-selves or the dreams in our hearts!

With Love,

“In life – pain is inevitable. But suffering is optional.” -unknown

Today is Monday, July 13th. My official due date is Wed, July 15th.

I’m READY and WAITING!

Last month, Gil and I took an all day course about labor and delivery called, “Childbirth Without Fear”.

Childbirth, as well as many other situations in life, can cause anxiety and fear. The more anxious and fearful a person is, the more they constrict and tense. This actually increases pain. The more pain that is experienced – the more anxious and fearful the person gets – thus creating a cycle of suffering.

On the contrary, the more relaxed a person is, the easier the process is to move through.

The teachers had us do a very interesting exercise regarding pain tolerance and management.

We had to hold an ice cube in one hand for one minute and focus on it. Then we wrote down from 1-10 how painful it was. (10 = highest level of pain)

I don’t have a high pain tolerance and I couldn’t even keep my hand closed around the cube. It was so painful and that one minute felt like an eternity. I wrote down a 10!

Next, we had to hold another ice cube in our hand for one minute, but this time focus on our breath. It was still uncomfortable, but I was able to do it and couldn’t believe how much faster the minute seemed to go. I wrote down a 6-7.

Lastly, we had to hold another ice cube in our hand for one minute and this time focus on everything going on around us externally. I wanted to be sure I wasn’t just getting used to it, so I put the ice cube in my other hand. This time, I hardly noticed the ice cube as I focused on what I was seeing, hearing, smelling and witnessing. I even felt a wave of gratitude wash through me for the teachers and the experience. The time passed very fast. I wrote down a 3.

I couldn’t believe that the level of pain decreased from a 10 to a 3 simply based on what I was focused on.

It was such a great reminder that when we focus solely on our problems in life we tend to cause ourselves a high degree of suffering.

But when we focus on breathing, the present moment and gratitude…we can move through discomfort with a lot less suffering. The power of our focus determines the experience of our reality.

Well, I haven’t experienced labor yet, but I will do my best with this practice during my delivery. And I have used it everyday and evening when I get uncomfortable or frustrated.

The next time you experience the sensation of suffering, please consider Breathing Mindfully, Being Present and shifting your attention to Gratitude. Experience for yourself, the positive results of this practice.

With Love,

- -

Here are some easy and fun action steps I took to help me manifest the perfect partner and relationship for me. See if any are a YES! for you.

1. Begin by reminding yourself that if you exist, then your counterpart (for this time and place) must also exist. It doesn’t matter if it seems like there are so many people unavailable or not what you’re looking for. You’re only looking for THE ONE. Statistics, averages and percentages have no bearing on your success in finding the right love for you.

2. Mindfully let go or pack away whatever you can from past relationships: love letters, gifts, photos, etc. You don’t have to necessarily do this all at once or completely. Just whatever you are able to at this point in time. Be gentle with yourself and this process. Allow it to be a sacred letting go of the past and an opening to a new future. Allow gratitude into your heart for all you have learned and received from your past experiences.

3. Create a compilation cd that has all your favorite love songs. Choose songs that convey the feelings and sentiments that are most important to you – which you want to share with your beloved. I would listen to my cd each night before bed and say a prayer that my higher self and his higher self would find one another and orchestrate the perfect way for us to meet at the perfect time.

4. Be on the look out for a symbol that represents the kind of energy you want your relationship to embody. For example: Years ago, I purchased two candlesticks that express the connectedness of synergy, yet honored individuality. Both candlesticks are made by the same artist and out of the same material. But one candlestick is taller than the other, has a long thin body that expands into a broad circle to hold the candle and has a square base with slightly curved edges. The other candlestick is smaller, has a long thin body that expands into 4 petals to hold the candle and has a round base that fits perfectly up against the curved sides of the other. I lit these candles in the past as a calling to my partner’s higher self to find me. And now we light them as a celebration of our union together. You could choose any symbol that is a YES! for you.

5. Create a vision board with images and text that represent the kind of relationship you want. Keep it front and center, somewhere that you’ll see it many times everyday.

6. Create a few special pairings in your home. For example, if you have a little bistro table, keep it set for two. Place two hand towels in your powder room. Place some special reading material or poetry on your opposite nightstand in anticipation of your partner’s arrival.

7. Create a list of all the special attributes your partner has. Spend a little time each day reading this list and visualizing what your life is like together.

8. Take pride in yourself. Be the best you can be for yourself and your partner to be. Don’t wait to get in shape, to read your favorite books or to learn something new. In order to meet the right partner you have to be the right partner.

9. Consider joining EHarmony. This is where I met my husband. It is up to you if you want to join other sites. Keep in mind that some sites seem to be more about dating. For me – EHarmony was more about finding your soul mate/life partner, rather than just dating and meeting people.

10. Consider joining an organization or volunteer group that you are interested in, so that you are around other like-minded people. It’s easier to make a connection when you have something in common.

11. Let people you feel comfortable with know that you are interested in finding a partner. Everyone knows someone who is searching for the right person. Go out with groups of friends to dinners or events and enjoy getting to know the people they know.

12. Enjoy your alone time for now. Alone time is sacred. Enjoy having the whole bed to yourself. Enjoy nurturing yourself. Enjoy being your own beloved for the time being. The way you treat yourself is how you train others to treat you. So set the bar high. People tend to fall in love with people who are already in love with their own life and heart. It’s intoxicating to be around someone who cherishes himself or herself and is happy just being.

13. Remember, you are deserving of great things and a great relationship. When dating, do not sacrifice yourself, your values or your deepest desires just because someone is willing to give you crumbs. It is better to be by yourself for a period of time and have a space for the right person to come in, rather than feeling alone in a relationship that is ultimately not the best for you. At the same time, it’s important to remember that you are not responsible for being anyone else’s savior, crutch or only reason for living. Staying in a relationship solely out of guilt is just as unhealthy as staying in one for crumbs. It takes courage to say YES to YOU and YES to LOVE!

14. Breathe, Relax, All is well. You are always in the right place at the right time. Trust in DIVINE TIMING!

With Love

Here’s a great idea for you. Why not take a present moment awareness walk today with the intention of seeing how many things you appreciate/LOVE!

It can be 5 minutes, 10 minutes, a half an hour.

You don’t have time for a walk outside you say…

Well just do it as go about your day!

While getting ready this am, I’ve already noticed that I appreciate/LOVE:

Waking up next to my beloved husband

My growing belly that holds my growing son

Nourishing, deep breaths

My warm, cozy bed

My zen alarm clock

Indoor plumbing

Hot water and lemon first thing in the morning

My wedding band

It’s American Idol night

An abundant bowl of delicious fruit on the kitchen table

My 2 clients that I’m going to see today

Email

The ease of having a cell phone

Comfortable clothes to wear

Health

A relatively clean home

The beautiful lily my sister in law gave me

(I could go on….)

And I’ve only been awake for 20 minutes!

You can do this anytime, anywhere…

getting your kids ready for the day

driving in your car

sitting at your desk at work

even while, you’re grocery shopping

The prescription couldn’t be simpler…

Breathe

Be Present

Focus on something you appreciate/Love

The quicker and more often you do this, the quicker you will see amazing shifts in your life.

It’s not hard to do.

It’s simple.

You just have to remember.

Just imagine what can happen if you go from not doing this at all (like most people)

To doing this once, 5 times, 20 times, all day, everyday (like the happiest, most successful people)

You get to choose who you want to be!

Are you going to be one of the many people who believe a rainy/cloudy day means it’s miserable day????

HA!

Rain or shine…

There are infinite little moments of small delights to enjoy.

Taste them, Savor them, Direct your focus, Look for the good, Do something you love, BREATH DEEP and ENJOY YOUR MOMENTS.

With Love,

You may not believe this, but I’ve had a cigarette or two in my day.

Depending on life circumstances, I would “feel like” having one. And some days I actually believed I NEEDED one!

Of course I knew it was not good for me…but I would “feel like” having one anyway.

Here’s the question…

Whether someone “feels like” it or not – are cigarettes ever going to serve you?

Is it ever in someone’s best interest to smoke cigarettes?

Obviously no.

So one day I decided…whether I “feel like” it or not…I’m NOT going to EVER SMOKE AGAIN!!!!!!

It was sooooooo liberating because IN MY MIND it was a DONE DEAL.

I didn’t have to think about it anymore.

No matter what happened or how tempted I got, smoking was not an option.

Well, negative thinking is exactly like cigarettes or anything else detrimental to your health.

It NEVER serves you.

Depending on life circumstances you may be tempted to get negative, anxious, fearful, etc.

It’s totally understandable.

But it’s never going to serve you to STAY in negative thinking.

Negative thinking puts you in a low vibration and causes your energy and physical body to constrict. Even your brain constricts, which means it does not function optimally. It stresses out your entire system and prevents you from being open to more blessings, solutions and opportunities.

I’ve decided that no matter what, I will mindfully breathe, be present, shift my attention, practice gratitude or at least reach for the next best thought.

People assume that serenity is my natural state and I must have always been like this.

But the truth is, once it REALLY CLICKED IN…

I DECIDED a low vibe never serves me, and I WILL NOT DWELL IN IT!

I may “feel like” getting down, worried or anxious sometimes. There are some days that I feel frustrated, upset and cry or vent. But I REFUSE to dwell in it for long.

People also assume that I’m just lucky and everything has a way of working out for me.

What they are really seeing is the RESULT of my DECISION to MAINTAIN A HIGH VIBE NO MATTER WHAT the situation appears to look like.

When it really clicks in how powerful this is, you may want to make the same decision for yourself.

Maybe you already have.

Decide to have fun today and enjoy being you!!!!!!!

NO MATTER WHAT!

With Love,
